Wormwood (Artemisia absinthium) is a plant of the composite family (Asteraceae). The species is on the Dutch Red List of plants as relatively rare and moderately decreased. It is a plant that occurs naturally in the temperate regions of Europe, Asia and North Africa. The botanical name Artemesia is derived from the Greek goddess Artemis and absinthium means in ancient Greek 'displeasure'. The plant is known as one of the bitter tasting herbs.
The plant is 60-120 cm long and flowers with pale yellow flowers from July to September. Wormwood has some piece leaves, both sides felt-like gray hairs. The plant is a rhizome (rhizome).
Wormwood is native, calcium, nitrogen-rich, cultivated soil.
The knobs of wormwood is a traditional medicinal properties attributed. The bitter extract of these buttons is an important component of the drinks vermouth and (classical) absinthe. The flavors that play a role are absinthine and to menthol scented terpene thujone.
Like all spirits, absinthe is very much in use to cause addiction. Prolonged and frequent use caused due to the high alcohol content (over 50%), nerve and brain damage.
